(Don't) DIY
Ubroadcast.com is gearing up to let you "Host hour own live Internet talk radio show or music station". Slick site. Looks promising. From the Company Overview:
ubroadcast, Inc. is The World's Online Broadcasting Community for the entertainment, education, advertising, marketing and sale of goods and services by a diverse community of individuals and small businesses.
ubroadcast's mission is to provide a global broadcasting platform and forum where practically anyone can discuss anything, and to provide "premium" content of music and entertainment to its listeners. We intend to provide the best of traditional radio, satellite radio, and Internet radio rolled into one venue.
which continues,
Empowering the listener and broadcaster alike through a web radio network, ubroadcast allows anyone to easily set up an Internet radio broadcast and begin transmitting almost instantly from any location with ubroadcast's software and an Internet connection.
ubroadcast's mission is to provide a global interactive Internet broadcasting platform - a forum where practically anyone can discuss anything - and provide free or premium content to its listeners. The ubroadcast web portal (www.ubroadcast.com) will provide listeners with an index of broadcast programs that can be easily searched by a number of key parameters, from location to subject matter to host name and profile.
ubroadcast represents a major venue for listeners to find the type of content they seek and for broadcasters to air opinions, promote products and services or increase exposure for themselves, their company or organization. In traditional radio, there are a finite number of frequencies a station can use to carry its signal. ubroadcast does not have these limitations, nor does its stations have to register with the FCC. Therefore, thousands of stations can be broadcasting at any time, and new stations can go online at will to discuss topics or subject matter without the limitations of censorship.
"Portal". Venue". "Premium content". These all say "silo" to me. Or, for in less technical jive, "walled garden". A private habitat.
Worse, the "more" link on that page goes to an Investors page that begins, To access the ubroadcast™ Executive Summary, please complete the following information... Name, address, phone number, email address. No thanks. I might fill it out if it also said "Your personal information will be kept private and confidential" or something like that. But it doesn't. And there's no reason the Executive Summary shouldn't be public anyway. What's to hide?
Finally, it requires a player that is currently Windows-only. No Linux or Mac versions. No sign that you can create your own player. Also no sign that some kind of open and standard codec is used. Certainly not .mp3, which would allow ubroadcast stations to be heard on iTunes, WinAmp, XMMS, or hardware such as Penguin Radio or Sonos. .ogg would be great too, but let's be real. These are not Linux Dudes, clearly.
As we saw in this IT Garage post, there is still no practical and easy way to do what most individuals would like to do on their live or podcast online radio shows: play RIAA-copyrighted music. The regime for live streaming is bad, and the one for podcasting is worse. Hence the need to stick with much less familiar podsafe music.
What we need is an easy prodiction system that navigates the legal mess that the record industry and their handmaidens in Congress have made of music use on the Net. I haven't seen it yet.
The Liniux-based Rivendell system for broadcasters, however, is coming along nicely. Maybe there's a way to build in podward and streamward directions from there.
Also check out the cool work being done by the CampWare folks with CampCaster, along with other free media tools.

ubroadcast launched live broadcasting a few weeks back and has some really great content already. I think you should take a look now Doc!

As one clever person said the judgement transforms tragical hedonism.
Here's how they should do it:
Flash communication server with a third party streaming service provider. That way all the end user needs is a microphone, an internet connection and flash player.
Users would connect to the communication server via flash player & microphone, and the streaming audio provider would broadcast and record the incoming audio so it could publish the podcast for replays.
This could be done, but it would require a significant investment to pull it off successfully.
My experience
I have great experience in that. So I can understand...

Blogtalk Radio IS the new revolution of blogging and podcasting all rolled up into one! I have been a host for a few months now and my show is one of the top rated shows on BTR.

The CEO, Alan Levy and the rest of the amazing staff at BTR cater to the needs of the hosts and the listeners. They are open to all of our ideas and are contstantly innovating new ones to make BTR better. It truly feels like a family, not just some online community.
You can check out my show at: www.blogtalkradio.com/ondaset which airs Thursday Evenings, or tune into any of my previously archived shows. We feature celeb interviews, world news, politics, comedy, and more!

Marc Sparks on BTR
BTR is a terrific find. I am very pleased to have been introduced to it. I agree that it could revolutionize the blog communication standard but I doubt that it will be the norm. Terrific product though.

Happy 2007 from Marc Sparks!

Why just Windows Media? Why not MP3?
Amy,
I like everything about BlogTalkRadio other than the fact I can't listen to it on my Linux machines, my Sonos home audio system, my Penguin Radio or any of our family's household Macs using iTunes.
So why not use MP3? Why put everybody inside the Windows Media silo?
And why, after I wrote about my disappointment that ubroadcast.com didn't use an open and standard codec like mp3, did you not remark about the fact that BlogTalkRadio is also limited to Windows Media?

BlogTalkRadio
I work with BTR and also use the platform, which has been written up quite a bit since its launch in August. I'd love to see a detailed comparison of the different services out there; I think most people are still unaware that "live podcasting" options even exist.

One detail for comparision
Scott,
As I just posted in response to Amy, BlogTalkRadio doesn't make the cut for me because I can't listen to it on any of the many platforms and devices I use, which all prefer the open and standard MP3 codec.
So I'll ask you as well: why not MP3? Why Windows Media alone? Why dismiss, for example, the massive population of iPods in the world?
Doc, What differentiates
Doc,
What differentiates BlogTalkRadio from standard podcasting is live streaming. The live streaming is done in a windows format. Once the show is complete the archive is available both in a windows and MP3 format along with a RSS feed. If you look at an individual host page i.e.( http://www.blogtalkradio.com/alanlevy ) under the archive tab you will see the Podcast icon for download of an individual show's MP3 file or the RSS feed on the right hand side of the page under "Subscribe Now".
