A DIY VoIP Question
Submitted by Ken Camp on Sat, 12/10/2005 - 02:59.
I recently helped launch a new VoIP community online at www.realtime-voip.com. I won't post the whole announcement and description here, but it's online at Digital Common Sense (here) if you're interested in VoIP or curious.
I have a question for all the other DIYers around here. Are you doing DIY VoIP? I'm trying to determine whether a DIY VoIP forum and discussion area makes sense over there. How many of you all are doing things you'd classify asa DIY-VoIP?
Thanks!

diy voip install
I stumbled into voipwired.com that really helped me. There's a page that shows how to setup VOIP with your home phone wiring so that any phone in your home can hook up to the VOIP adapter. There are even graphics on properly connecting a backup power supply and a surge protector. Here's the link, I hope you find it helpful http://www.voipwired.com/info/info_install_wiring.htm

small company getting on board in new office
Yes, absolutely. We're a small company, just set up a new office with 7 people. We're setting up an asterisk server, with a customized plan that sends calls either into the office or to cell phones for those doing travel. The plan is for the asterisk box to connect to a VoIP provider and serves a set of Grandstream phones. There's no cabling in the new location (concrete walls) so we're doing everything with wireless.
It's a little early to report results but we're very hopeful. It's clear we're going to save significantly on long distance charges as well as PBX installation charges. The downside is that it seems significantly more work to set this up than installing a turnkey system.
Thanks for taking the time
I know asterisk servers are really popular, but haven't had the time to set on eup myself and experiment. It's on my to do list. I really appreciate that feedback. I've run into lots of people exploring with them, but I personally didn't know anyone really doing much in business with them. Just points out my own lack of a broad enough perspective. I've been to tied into commercial vendor solutions lately.
Thanks!

Asterisk
The asterisk community is very large and active. I would argue that it is the second largest voip related community out there (second, by a large margin, to skype) I would suggest getting on the asterisk-biz and users mailing lists, and installing the thing yourself on a spare box somewhere. Asterisk@home is the fastest way to start...
The 1.2 release of asterisk is excellent.
Asterisk
Thanks. I actually have it all ready to install and a spare box ready to go. Didn't get a chance to play last night but between now and the weekend I plan on having it up and running to support my home office.
