How does IT help with Katrina recovery?

Restoring computing and commmunications function after a massive hurricane isn't just a job for big vendors and utilities (even though they'll be doing a bunch of PR on the subject). Nor is using IT to help with recovery in general.

Since most IT folks don't blog, but many will have post-Katrina stories to tell, I'm volunteering IT Garage as a place where anybody with a story can tell it. If you don't have an account, create one, and post away.

Meanwhile, Computerworld says Red Cross looks to IT for post-Katrina recovery.

how "smart mobs for homeland security" applies to Katrina relief

My approach to homeland security emphasizes the role of technology to empower and directly involve the general public: what I call "smart mobs for homeland security" (based on Howard Rheingold's smart mobs concept: "Smart mobs emerge when communication and computing technologies amplify human talents for cooperation."). The concept seems equally applicable to Katrina -- although in the early stages, many tech options are foreclosed due to lack of electricity and cell coverage. I've created a new category for my blog concentrating on the idea, including suggestions such as using Flickr Memory Maps to highlight homes where survivors might be found, or creating an emergency communications network similar to the DCERN one in DC -- using cheapo FRS walkie-talkies. http://www.stephensonstrategies.com/categories/hurricaneKatrinaAndSmartMobs
