SIP’ing the Tiger

If your not just out of your mind already that you must have Apple’s new release of OSX Tiger, then you are in no way interested in this. Move on.

But, if you are, let me fill you in on this analyst’s perspective of what the future holds for the Apple GUI built on BSD.

Besides that it is just bitchin, albeit a possible IT nightmare, Tiger incorporates what I think are two distinctive technologies that crush all other Desktop OS/NOS Platforms.

First, iChatAV just frickin rocks. I don’t care what you think any unix variant does, this is my vote for the 2005 killer app. When I first saw it run at Macworld SF in January, I was utterly thrilled that true collaboration conferencing was finally coming to the desktop. Better yet, it is one small but giant step for singular communication platforms to unite closer to the desktop. It’s not that it is already there in other flavors and platforms, but knowing that your already smart about IT, you know that VoIP SIP Based communication may be the standard of all communication for the next 50 years. Now, going one step further, iChat AV, although a transport based on h264 , another Apple self proclaimed win, is just another bridging technology that brings best of breed software together in one place. iChatAV coupled with a SIP desktop app (anyday I’m sure now) completely eliminates the need for the telset. It is, undisputed, the Killer App for communication. In fact, I’ll wager that with Apple’s widgets technology (introduced elsewhere as Konfabulator will pave the way for mini SIP applets on the desktop, if they are not java based first.

Since Doc loves preaching about Open Source, lets not forget that from a unix perspective, writing for open on BSD is as robust as Linux anyday. If you don’t believe so, then I’ll pass on your ignorance and let you go to Apple’s Unix Rant and then of course to the Apple’s Open Source Page for more detail.

Bottom line, 2005 is the beginning of desktop SIP VoIP. The players will be named, the game has begun. More on this later.

Next is Apple’s Spotlight technology . It is the Uber of search tools. The daddy of getting awesome content found “now
