How do I post to the Garage?

First, you have to get permission to post anything besides comments. If you want to write original articles, contact Doc at doc-at-ssc.com.

Once your permissions have been raised, try clicking on Create Content. You should see a menu showing the types of entries which you can now create. In general, you should use "story" if it's just a single-page post, and "book page" if it's anything more complex or needs a hierarchy.

If you simply want to create a single page story, click on that link. A form should load in your browser, which you will need to fill out to make your story. Your name and the creation date should already be filled in. Now look at the options checkboxes:

Note under the Options there are five checkboxes.

"Published" means that others can access the article.
"In moderation queue" means that the article can be accessed from the Submissions Queue menu item.
"Promoted to front page" means that the article will be posted to the front page. Additionally, it will be in the RSS feed.
"Static on front page" means the item will not be pushed down as newer articles are published.
"Create Revision" means that Drupal will keep a copy of each of the older revisions, allowing revisions to be undone or backed out.

Usually, you would check "Published" and "Promoted to front page". However, you might want to uncheck those two and check "In moderation queue" if you don't want anyone to see your work-in-progress.

In the User Comments checkboxes, you can only check one of the three choices. This should be self-explanatory. Note that only users registered at the site can post comments.

The next input field is Title. You must enter a title.

The next field, Path Alias, should not be used unless the page you are creating is going to become a permanent part of the site's structure. If this is the case, you can use the path alias to create a URL which makes sense for the page. For example, the FAQ page has this URL: http://garage.docsearls.com/faq/. This page is the parent for the page you are reading.

What is a parent in this context? If you are creating a book page, the next thing you will see on the page is a pulldown menu named Parent. This is used to create a hierarchical structure for books. Each time a book is made and has the parent assigned to it, it has the possibility of becoming a parent to other pages. So for example, this page has FAQ for a parent, and will be positioned automatically underneath the ./faq/ page noted above. The first parent is typically just a blank page or placeholder, although there is no reason that it can't have text. If you don't need a hierarchical structure for you submission, leave this option alone. It can always be changed later.

The next part of the form is the Body. This is the main part of your article. Note that some HTML tags (listed belos the form window) are allowed. Any other will be stripped.

The log message is additional information relevant to the article. Typically it is left blank on this site.

The weight pulldown allows the article to be positioned in the book hierarchy (if it has one). Heavier items sink to the bottom, lighters one float to the top. If wieghts are equal, articles are sorted alphabetically.

Once you are done entering your text, press the Preview button. This will allow you to see what your article will look like. Once it looks the way you want it to, press Submit. Please check to make sure any included links work, and that there are no bleeding HTML tags that alter appearance of the normal page.

If you are posting anything more than a simple article, it is a good idea to create the article in a text editor, and then copy it into the Garage text entry form. in this way, you will avoid losing your work if you session times out or your connection has trouble.
